
Kari Bergholm Ambassador of Finland

On November 3rd 2006 a meeting took place in Lovech with Mr. Kari Bergholm. Mr. Bergholm is a retired ambassador who has worked for a long time in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. He has also been President of the International Folklore Organization, CIOFF 1997 - 2005. His grandfather was born in Lovech 1881 when his great-grandfather was serving as officer in the Bulgarian Army after the end of Russian Turkish war in 1877 - 1878.

Preparation of this meeting was started with the help of officers from Bulgarian Military ministry in the time of celebration of The Day of Romanian Army – 15 October 2006.
The main part of the meeting was done from Mayor of Lovech Mr. Mincho Kazandjiev and Chairmen of Reserve Officers and Noncommissioned Officers Union in Lovech and Pleven branches.

Mr. Kari Bergholm and Mayor of Lovech

Deeply dear visitor of Bulgaria and Lovech tell histories about his ancestors in Bulgaria. Mr. Bergholm describe possible ways of collaboration between NGO "Memory" and the Veteran Officers of the Finnish Guards. He agreed that it would be an excellent idea to organize a folklore festival in Pleven and Lovech in connection with 130 years from clearing Pleven and Lovech in 1877 during the Russian Turkish war.

Forefather of Kari Bergholm

Mr. Bergholm donated a photograph of his great-grandfather, lieutenant-colonel Otto von Freymann to the Commander of the garrison of Lovech, lieutenant-colonel Marinov. Otto von Freymann served, like many other Finnish officers, in the Russian Imperial Army during the Bulgarian War of Liberation 1877 - 78. After the war he was Commander of the 13th Infantry Druschina in Lovech 1880-84.
